The 30-Step Playbook (5 Phases)

Phase 1: Validate (Days 1-7)

Before you spend a dime, make sure people want what you're selling.

  1. Pick a niche or product category — Fashion, beauty, gadgets, home goods. Something you care about.
  2. Research the competition — Check TikTok, Amazon, Shopify stores. What's already selling well?
  3. Interview 5-10 potential customers — Ask if they'd buy. Really listen.
  4. Run a Reddit/Twitter survey — Post in relevant communities. Ask people what problems they face.
  5. Create a landing page (free) — Use Carrd or Webflow. One headline, why this product matters, email signup.
  6. Drive 100 visits to landing page — TikTok, Instagram, Reddit. Get ~5% to sign up emails.
  7. If 5+ people sign up, proceed to Phase 2 — You have signal. If not, try a different angle.

Phase 2: Source (Days 8-14)

Find a supplier who can actually fulfill orders without destroying your margins.

  1. List the exact product specs you want — Size, color, material, packaging. Be specific.
  2. Create accounts on Spocket, AutoDS, and CJ Dropshipping — Search for your product.
  3. Find 3 supplier options — Check shipping time, price, reviews. Take notes.
  4. Request samples from top 2 suppliers — Order 1-2 units yourself. See quality, unboxing experience.
  5. Calculate your cost structure — Product cost + shipping + fees + CAC + returns. Use our margin calculator.
  6. Choose your primary supplier — Best balance of quality, price, and speed.
  7. Get backup supplier contact info — For when primary is slow or has issues.

Phase 3: Build (Days 15-21)

Set up the infrastructure to take orders and deliver them.

  1. Choose your sales channel — TikTok Shop (if you have followers), Shopify, or both.
  2. Register domain — Brandname.com, or use Shopify's subdomain initially.
  3. Set up Shopify store (if Shopify route) — Add products, write descriptions using Claude/ChatGPT.
  4. Set up TikTok Shop (if TikTok route) — Connect to Spocket/CJ for inventory sync.
  5. Add payment processor — Stripe (recommended) or PayPal.
  6. Configure shipping settings — Decide: you ship, customer ships, 3PL ships.
  7. Create 5 product variations — Colors, sizes. Keep it simple for launch.
  8. Write email capture flow — Free email sequence post-purchase. Use Klaviyo or Beehiiv.

Phase 4: Launch (Days 22-28)

Get your first sales without spending your entire bootstrap budget.

  1. Create 3 product demo videos — Use CapCut, show actual product, not rendered. Post on TikTok, Instagram, YouTube.
  2. Post content 3x per week — Educational, entertaining, or inspirational. Hook viewers in first 3 seconds.
  3. Build an email list — Use landing page + email signup. Send weekly value (tips, trends, exclusive previews).
  4. Get friends to place test orders — First 5 orders should be from your network. Get real feedback.
  5. Optimize based on feedback — Is shipping fast enough? Is product quality meeting expectations? Fix now.
  6. Set up analytics — Google Analytics, TikTok Creator Analytics, Shopify Dashboard. Know your numbers.
  7. Create a 1-page FAQ — Shipping time, returns, sizing. Reduce customer service burden.

Phase 5: Scale (Days 29+)

Profitable playbook is working. Now test what actually converts.

  1. Spend $50-100 on paid ads — TikTok or Facebook. Test 2-3 videos. See what resonates.
  2. Track CAC (Customer Acquisition Cost) — Ad spend / # customers. Should be under 25% of gross profit.
  3. Double down on best content — Run similar videos with slight variations. Find the winning formula.
  4. Automate supplier communication — Use Zapier or Make to sync TikTok Shop orders automatically to your supplier.
  5. A/B test pricing — Same product, 2 price points. Let data tell you optimal price.

Launch Checklist (Pre-Launch)

Before you take your first order, verify all of these are done:

  • ☐ Supplier can fulfill in 5-15 days (or acceptable to your channel)
  • ☐ You've ordered a sample and checked quality personally
  • ☐ Pricing leaves 25%+ margin after all costs
  • ☐ Payment processor is live and processing test transactions
  • ☐ Shipping settings configured and tested
  • ☐ Product description written and spell-checked
  • ☐ Product photos or videos uploaded
  • ☐ Customer support email set up and monitored
  • ☐ Email capture form working (post-purchase sequence ready)
  • ☐ Legal pages drafted (Privacy, Terms, Refund policy)
  • ☐ 3 pieces of content created and posted
  • ☐ Analytics connected and tracking

The First 30 Days Mindset

Remember:

  • Your job is to get to "Product-Market Fit," not $10K/month revenue.
  • First customers are your best customers—they're patient, give honest feedback, become your advocates.
  • You will make mistakes. Expect them. Fix fast.
  • Content is your free CAC. Post authentically. Don't sell; tell stories.
  • Your supplier is your partner, not a vendor. Treat them well.
  • Track everything. You can't optimize what you don't measure.
  • Quit fast if market doesn't respond. Better to pivot on day 30 than day 90.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How much money do I need to start?

A: $300-1000 is realistic. Breakdown: domain ($12), Shopify/platform ($29-99), samples ($50-100), first stock ($100-500), minimal ads ($100). You don't need $5K to launch. You need good execution.

Q: What if I don't have a TikTok following yet?

A: Start with Shopify. TikTok Shop requires 1000+ followers. Build your TikTok audience parallel to Shopify sales. Once you hit 1000+ followers, add TikTok Shop as second sales channel. Many successful sellers start here.

Q: How long until I make my first sale?

A: If you follow this playbook and have legitimate product-market fit, first sale within 2-4 weeks. If nothing after 4 weeks, you have a demand problem, not an execution problem. Pivot.
